NEW FORMAT - WEEKEND WORKSHOPS
Workshop
Dates:
May 15 & 16, 2010 - Saturday and Sunday - Cost: $75.00 per person per day, which includes
all materials
Sign up for one or both days - you pick - Saturday and/or Sunday.

July 10 & 11, 2010 - Saturday and Sunday - Cost: $80.00 per person per day, which includes
all materials
Sign up for one or both days - you pick - Saturday and/or Sunday.
Time: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM both days
We will start with the basics and
have you enameling within 15 minutes. You will quickly move on to
more advanced procedures and selected techniques on both days.

Saturday will consist of three projects which involve many enameling procedures and materials which will give you a strong grounding in basic enameling. Procedures include sifting, firing, wet inlay, application of fine silver foil, mixing colors by layering, stencil, liquid brushable enamel, sgraffito, and a simple cloisonne using fine silver wire on fine silver tooling sheet.
If you have taken the "Intro to Enameling Workshop" before, the second day (Sunday) will have new and different procedures and techniques to learn.

Sunday will consist of learning about painting on enamel materials (ceramic pigments, water colors, overglaze painting colors, acrylic enamels, enamel marking pens, enamel marking crayons, oils and mediums used, and Carefree Lusters®). The day will also cover many procedures (transferring an image/cartoon, creating texture, painting procedures, color mixing, firing, and transparent clear cover coats. Three other procedures will be shown, dry brush sgraffito, dropping and coating a three dimensional shape i.e. a copper bowl.
By the end of
each workshop day, you should have a good idea as to what you wish to
accomplish with enamel.
All tools and materials are
supplied. Participants are only expected to bring a brown bag
lunch, an open mind, and a pair of eager hands. There are fast
food restaurants close by, if you prefer.
If you plan to arrive the evening
before, we recommend Comfort Suites, (859) 291-6700. Tell them you are

Black Oxide - Sgraffito - Silver Foil - Transparent Enamel Workshop
Instructor: Tom Ellis
Saturday, June 26, 2010
Time: 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM
Cost: $80
Material Fee: apprx. $10 depending on material choices
Workshop Description:
Black oxide mixed with Klyr-Fire and water is applied directly onto copper with a sponge. It is allowed to dry, then further worked by sgraffito. A transparent enamel that works well direct on copper is applied and fired. Fine silver foil is applied and fired to this surface. Black oxide is again applied over the silver foiled areas adding texture. 913E Mixing white can be applied as additional line work. Transparent colors are again applied and fired. This procedure may be repeated. A final application of 913E Mixing white and/or Carefree lusters may be applied. The black of the oxide highly contrasts with the transparent enamels direct on copper and the brightness of the silver foil . This creates dramatic visual depth.

before, we recommend Comfort Suites, (859) 291-6700. Tell them you are

W.W. Carpenter Enamel Foundation Third Biennial “Get Together”
Focus on Fire, the torch
First week of August, 2010
W.W. Carpenter Enamel Foundation, Bellevue, KY
We’ve invited three known individuals who teach torch firing as part of their individual reference as enamelers. Each has their own approach and uniqueness. Each will teach three, two-day workshops. You will have an opportunity to do a workshop with all three instructors.

Steve Artz is a master carpenter by trade, even though he has been an exhibiting enamelist for more than 30 years. He discovered this luscious medium while attending Joann Tanzer's Enameling class at San Diego State University in 1975. He is well known for his innovative approach to fusing glass to metal and inventive ways of texturing metal. He is a working member of the San Diego Enamel Guild as well as having been a past president and board member. He has been a board member of Enamel Guild West and a trustee of the Enamelist Society. Steve has taught many workshops and play days as well as being a continuing instructor at John C. Campbell Folk School for more than 13 years. He has also taught classes for Arrowmont School of Art and Craft, the Enamelist Society Conferences and The Creative Arts Group in Pasadena, California. He has given many enamel demonstrations to school groups as well as docent education in enameling for the Mengi Museum in San Diego's Balboa Park.
Steve Artz's Workshop title and description:
Experimental Enameling With A Hand Held Torch
Torch fired enameling is a fast and economical way of firing smaller enamel pieces. We can actually observe the fusion of the molten glass to metal first hand and the development of color and texture before your eyes, something we could only imagine within the chamber of the kiln. We will be using thinner gauges of copper than usual with some metal manipulation and texturing with some innovative tools. Many of the existing enameling techniques may be incorporated with a twist. In this class all levels will be welcome... Come play with fire!

Her work is in numerous public and private collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Art and Design in NYC.
Linda Darty's Workshop title and description:
Torching Tradition
In addition to using a torch to create special effects not typical in kiln firing, torch firing can also be used with the intention of replicating the effects of traditional kiln firing. In this workshop we will explore the use of a torch to replace kiln firing as a means of controlling surface texture and color. Working on jewelry scale pieces, students will learn to fire with a torch while exploring traditional enamel techniques.Note to students: In this class we will talk about a variety of contemporary enameling techniques and you can choose to work on what interests you most. Depending on your personal interests and your previous experience, you might wish to try several of the techniques, exploring and making samples, or you might prefer to more seriously concentrate on one process.

Deborah Lozier: "Food for Thought" (Seder plate) enamel on copper (torch and kiln fired) approx. 2 x 3 x 4 ", 2009
Deborah Lozier, born 1961, in Des Moines, Iowa. Lives in Oakland, California where she is a studio artist and Adjunct Professor at the California College of the Arts. Attended Arizona State University, Tempe - B.F.A. Crafts, 1984. Exhibits and teaches internationally and is best known for her esoteric approach to enameling on fabricated copper. Her jewelry and metalwork have been printed in Metalsmith and American Craft Magazines and many recent Lark Publications including 500 Enameled Objects and The Art of Enameling by Linda Darty. Lilyan Bachrach included her torch firing approach in Enameling with Professionals. She has received artist grants from the City of Oakland and the Society of North American Goldsmiths, and is part of the permanent collection of the Oakland Museum of California.
Deborah Lozier's Workshop title and description:
Torch Firing Enamel: A Study in Cause and Effect
Torch firing is a wonderful way to experience enameling in all of its stages and is often presented as an easy and cheaper alternative to kiln firing enamels. While this can be the case with small scale and one sided applications, meander into more complex three dimensional forms or larger objects and the true mysteries of torch firing emerge. While the kiln is controlled and clean, it creates an even heat more like baking in an oven. The torch is uneven and variable, creating a cascade of heat with results more similar to cooking on your stove top. Although these two processes absolutely intersect, this class will focus on the aspects of torch firing which set it apart from the kiln. In this workshop we will explore the nuances of the torch and how to tame the process by observing the results from differing variables. Through an understanding of heat transfrer and pigment characteristics, we will take apart the Thompson Enamel color chart and create a personal palette that lends itself to what torch firing has to offer. The class will cover fabrication & forming strategies, applications, firing principles & props to accentuate the positives while embracing and coaxing the difficulties into submission. For every action there is a reaction and it is this space in between where discoveries are made. Come with an open mind ready to learn by evaluating the relationships of cause and effect.
